One of the things that I have been working on lately is to make sure I take care of those things that have been entrusted to me. Such things as relationships, like my marriage, or to my children and for employees and customers. In other words, it is easy for me to run to something new and not fully take care of what I have. This leads to incomplete work and relationships and opportunities, and decisions. So as each day arises and during the day, I ask myself, ”Am I taking care of my present relationships and responsibilities?” I have found that when following this method, that there is greater peace and reward and progress. Then peacefully and productively I can move on to the new relationships and things.

This is the value of teaching a character quality in an organization. The other night (about 9:45pm), I was teaching a group of about 20 employees from a nice sub shop. I was talking about Orderliness vs. confusion - arranging myself and my surroundings to achieve greater efficiency. We talked about how to develop this quality using our 5 keys.

Set Priorities

Set Standards

Get Organized

Eliminate Clutter

Put Away – Right Away

As we discussed these concepts from our monthly bulletin and then gave some real life examples in the workplace and at home, the employees really became engaged. We had a great discussion about orderliness in their lives.

The next day, my wife and I stopped by the restaurant and a female employee said when she went home after the meeting, that she began to look at her house from a different perspective. She used the concepts to see how she could better organize parts of her home. The same thinking applied to the workplace.

It is good when we can see how to better develop these qualities in our lives in order to reach our full potential.
